I'll pick it up at D Fuzzy, but probably not as up to date as you would hope...what can I say, I am nearing the 40 mark in a hair over 2 years so I am set in my musical ways pretty much. I do like some new stuff if it is more like traditional type of rock and some funky music too. My only problem is that I don't listen to the radio so I don't know who is singing when I do hear a song I like.

Some history about TELSTAR

Telstar is a 1962 instrumental record performed by The Tornados. It was the first single by a British band to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and was also a number one hit in the UK. The record was named after the AT&T communications satellite Telstar, which went into orbit in July 1962.

The song was released five weeks later on 17 August 1962. It was written and produced by Joe Meek, and featured a clavioline, a keyboard instrument with a distinctive electronic sound.

This novelty record was intended to evoke the dawn of the space age, complete with sound effects that were meant to sound "space-like". A popular story at the time of the record's release was that the weird distortions and background noise came from sending the signal up to the Telstar satellite and re-recording it back on Earth. It is more likely that the effects were created in Meek's recording studio, which was a small flat above a shop in London. It has been claimed that the sounds intended to symbolize radio signals were produced by Meek running a pen around the rim of an ashtray, and that the "rocket blastoff" at the start of the record was actually a flushing toilet, with the recordings made to sound exotic by playing the tape in reverse at various speeds.

The record was an immediate hit after its release on August 17, 1962, remaining in the UK pop charts for 25 weeks, five of them at number one, and in the American charts for 16 weeks.

A French composer, Jean Ledrut, accused Joe Meek of plagiarism, claiming that the tune of "Telstar" had been copied from La Marche d'Austerlitz, a piece from a score that Ledrut had written for the 1960 film Austerlitz. This led to a lawsuit that prevented Meek from receiving royalties from the record during his lifetime, and the issue was not resolved in Meek's favour until a year after his death in 1967. It is unlikely that Meek was aware of Austerlitz, as it had been released only in France at the time.

"Telstar" won an Ivor Novello Award and is estimated to have sold at least five million copies worldwide.

Question - Moody Blues

I've seen them 6 or 7 times in the past 4 decades. This performance is from 1985... saw them in '86 with (I think) The Fixx, and again in '87 or '88 with Til' Tuesday. Both times at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach, ME. Saw them twice since then, in West Palm Beach FL (my daughter surprised me on a visit down to see her) and most recently here in NH. Wayyyyy back in the day I saw them in Boston Garden in '70 and a couple more times in the 70's but I had too good a time to remember the details. :happy

1968. My sophomore year when this one came out. I never forgot it. Classmate died in a headon. Vietnam was raging. Seemed like death was everywhere. 45 years later this song sounds the same......and death is still everywhere.

Strawberry Farms

"Summer comes early to Strawberry Farms
Where the wind never blows
and things don't die..."

MI7Nx7vaGAg

Summer comes laughing to strawberry farms
Have you ever been there, where the wind never blows
Summer comes early to strawberry farms
Oh the sun always shines but an orphan can’t go

My mother is dead, she doesn’t care where I go
My father left a long, long time ago
I had me a frog, he never whined or cried
I kept him in my pocket and he died

Summer comes laughing to strawberry farms
Have you ever been there, where the wind never blows
Summer comes early to strawberry farms
Oh the sun always shines but an orphan can’t go

Bobby had a brother, he got killed in the war
I asked him but he didn’t know what for
My mother was pretty, she had long black hair
Once, she promised me a teddy bear

Summer comes laughing to strawberry farms
Have you ever been there, where the wind never blows
Summer comes early to strawberry farms
Oh the sun always shines and things don’t die

Time Has Come Today - The Chambers Brothers

Back in summer 1971 I was living for a while in Durham NH with a black guy I met that spring in Washington DC. The reason I make mention of the fact that he was black is because he had a sizable record collection with a lot of "black" stuff I hadn't heard, and I had one as well with stuff that he didn't have, but had heard, because the radio was full of white stuff back in the day. When we mixed them we had a heck of a record library.

He played guitar (good), as did I (not-so-good). He had several Chambers Brothers lps and I recall one night me, him and a couple other local musicians jamming and playing this song, "Love, Peace & Happiness" and a couple others. Which, reflecting on it now, I don't know why we weren't jamming to Santana stuff because he would spend hours & hours learning every lick on the "Abraxas" lp.

Anyhow, I connected with him several years ago & found he's become a well respected jazz musician, still jamming on the guitar on weekend nights. He reminded me that I still have his Funkadelic lps, and I reminded him that he still has my Moody Blues Lps.

You need only the part of the youtube address that is in red below:

So, all you need to do to post the above video is to post this (with no spaces, I got them so you can see the code)

[ youtube ] f8cHxydDb7o [ /youtube ]

The result should give you this:

I just love me some Van ….

oh yeah …

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Cool jazz at its finest ….

OM... sometime I'll have to recount meeting Van in the 1969-1970 period. He was living in Cambridge Mass, or at least was during the beginning of that time. I had ties with the music community in Cambridge since the summer of 68 when I sorta ran away from home for a few months. :hmm

I saw him in a "concert" in which there there weren't more than 50 people show up, and that included his band, the opening band (whom I was with) and the staff at the venue.

Although Van was awesome, playing about 50% blues mixed with some stuff from Astrial weeks, Moondance, and earlier, I remember later in the mid 70's after finding songs like Domino & Blue Money on a compilation LP of mostly "has beens" thinking that he was done.

How wrong i was.

Another Van Morrison story, OM.

Back in the mid-80's when I got my 1st CD player, I had a collection of upwards 1100 lps. I decided that I would go on a program of eventually replacing 20 or 30 of my "favorites" (discounting The Beatles, whose whole catalog - when released - was a given). One of the LPs I picked was Moondance. I bought the CD and played it having not heard the entire album for a couple years. Man o man, as soon as it was done I jumped into the car abd buzzed down and got Astral Weeks. Next day I got Saint Dominic's Preview and over the next month I got 3 or 4 more.

Just thought I'd share that.
