View Full Version : canned heat

Down in the garden, just past the apple trees
lies a pretty rock edged pond
that puts my mind at ease.

It never holds the same old view, changing with the light
Clouds dance across it all day long
Til the moon cuts in at night.

In the early morning hours, before the sun breaks through
The deer come by to have a drink
leaving hoof prints in the dew.

And as the sun warms up the rocks, more life begins to show
Announced by red winged blackbirds
Down where the rushes grow.

Birds arrive for morning baths, grasshoppers dry their wings
The surface of the water moves
Stirred by little insect things.

A golden glint,a silver flash, the fishes now arrive
Giving morning kisses
Then as a school they dive.

A chipmunk chitters in the sun, his racing stripes aglow
The marmot tunnels his way in
He thinks that I don't know.

Plops a frog,eyes a blinking,and another who lies thinking
They know I see them all as princes
That is why the big one's winking.

Above, the sun now hot and high, illuminates blue dragonfly
bluebottles buzzing sounds abound
blue heron's shadow gliding by.

Hours I've spent, were they a waste, lost time in this world of haste?
Or like ripe berries, jarred and stored
Some things to sweeten winter's taste?

Thanks TigresseBlanca. :flowers I appreciate your comments.

I wrote this as a narration for a video I made for a small child, who moved to this area in winter and has never yet seen it without snow.He was full of questions about the snow filled hole (pond) so I put some clips together with this poem to show him what it was like in summer.

Thoreau would have liked this piece, as well as the thoughtful soul who penned it.
