Jet Blue Passenger Plane To Make Emergency Landing; 145 People on Board

They are going to try to land at LAX, but from what they said the landing gear is down but it is twisted. So a "soft landing" is questionable? You know how this goes with a fresh story, they mess it up 1/2 the time. :ohwell

et Blue Flight to Attempt 'Soft Landing' After Landing Gear Jams
Wednesday, September 21, 2005

A Jet Blue flight with 145 people aboard, which was flying from Burbank, Calif., to New York, will attempt to make a "soft landing" after it landing gear jammed. The Airbus 320 (search) took off from Burbank Airport at 6:17 p.m. EDT, but turned around after its landing gear didn't raise and was apparently twisted.

The jetliner attempted and failed to make an emergency landing at Long Beach airport after the problem was discovered. The plane, which is roughly the size of a Boeing 737, began dumping fuel into the Pacific Ocean in preparation for the emergency procedure.

Jetliner Trying to Make Emergency Landing

CNNThe jet's front landing gear appears to be damaged.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 21) - A JetBlue airliner with landing gear problems circled the Los Angeles area for more than two hours Wednesday as the pilots dumped fuel over the ocean and officials tried to determine how to make an emergency landing.

The pilots discovered the plane's front wheels were turned sideways and stuck as they tried to retract the gear shortly after takeoff.

The back landing gear was also down as the plane circled, but it appeared to be in the correct position. Officials planned to try to land the aircraft, relying on the back wheels, at Los Angeles International Airport, which has longer runways than surrounding airports and more emergency equipment.

JetBlue Flight 292 left Burbank's Bob Hope Airport at 3:17 p.m. with 139 passengers headed for New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, said airline spokesman Bryan Baldwin.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Donn Walker said the Airbus A320 was dumping fuel over the Pacific to lighten the plane for an emergency landing.

"After leaving Burbank, pilots reported a landing gear indication light on, meaning there may be a problem or issue with the landing gear," Baldwin said. He said the crew decided to head for a nearby airport to attempt to land.

The plane first circled the Long Beach Airport, about 30 miles south of Burbank, then was cleared to land at Los Angeles, said LAX spokeswoman Nancy Castles.

JetBlue is based in Forest Hills, N.Y.

Drat!!! I wanted to blame Bush.

I watched it live on our local news. Yeah it was a flawlesssly executed landing. They said the pilot landed that jet like he was Navy-trained. It looked like he rode smack dab on the center white line the whole way. What a great ending!

Very funny Cloud!!! ;)

I watched it and it was an amazing landing. Cpt Burke was the awsome pilot that did that!! How freaking cool.

That was beautiful. That pilot deserves a great big bonus! :thumbsup

That was NOT how a Navy pilot lands an aircraft. They are trained, DOWN! STOP! NOW!!!.
